David and House Hues did an amazing job on our 1892 home. The entire team is super nice and all are very professional. David was able to provide multiple color renderings so we would know exactly what we were getting. He and his team did an unbelievable amount of prep work and their attention to detail is astonishing. It was a lengthy process, but that is what makes his work top notch. We could not be happier with the end result. Our home looks better than it has in many years. House Hues is soon to paint the third house on our street…just showing that the quality of his work speaks for itself. David is great at communicating every step of the way. We wouldn’t hesitate to recommend him and House Hues!

We couldn’t be happier with the transformation of our home! We had our brick limewashed by House Hues and it turned out absolutely stunning and exceeded our expectations. David and his team are incredibly talented and took the time to understand the look we were going for and brought our vision to life. The team was professional, detail-oriented, and a pleasure to work with. David was responsive, and genuinely cared about making sure we loved the final result. If you’re considering limewashing your brick or updating your home’s exterior (or refreshing the interior!) I can’t recommend them enough. The quality of their work speaks for itself.

As an interior designer, I’ve had the pleasure of working with David and his team on a number of projects. Notably, including my own home, in which his team touched nearly every inch of our 8,000 sq ft house after it was completely rewired and plastered. David is my go-to painter, especially for historic homes—he knows plaster, intricate moldings, historic windows—so well. In painting, you are how you prep. David holds his team to exceedingly high standards when it comes to prepping walls (he has also done furniture for me), and the end results are proof of his dedication to his craft. He’s executed everything from high gloss to matte finishes, interiors and exteriors, for me and my clients. Highly recommend.

House Hues exceeded every expectation. David painted our entire home after a renovation, and his attention to detail is outstanding. He was incredibly thoughtful and particular about the type of paint he used, making sure every product was the right choice for durability, finish, and overall look. He also used a higher‑quality lamb‑wool roller that made the paint application incredibly clean and even — you can see the difference immediately. At a time when we were overwhelmed with decisions, David was patient, knowledgeable, and offered clear recommendations that truly elevated the final look of our home. One of the highlights is our main railing, which he finished in a gorgeous, gloss black. Every contractor who has been in our home since has stopped to admire it and comment on how difficult it is to achieve such a flawless finish. We are thrilled with the work and highly recommend House Hues to anyone looking for quality craftsmanship.

We recently hired House Hues to paint our office kitchen, and we couldn’t be happier with the result. From the very first consultation, Dave was professional, attentive, and eager to get our kitchen paint back to where it was. They arrived on time, treated our space with care, and worked efficiently without cutting corners. The prep work was meticulous—walls and cabinets were cleaned and sanded, and all fixtures were carefully protected. The final paint job is smooth, even, and looks absolutely professional. If you’re looking for a reliable, detail‑oriented painting company that treats your home like their own, we highly recommend House Hues for any painting project you may have.

What Is VeroMetal?

VeroMetal is a cold-applied metal coating system that uses real metal particles suspended in a binding agent. Unlike metallic paints that simulate metal appearance, VeroMetal contains actual copper, brass, bronze, iron, zinc, or aluminum particles. When applied to surfaces and finished properly, it becomes real metal that oxidizes, patinas, and ages exactly like solid metal would.

The system originated in the Netherlands and has gained recognition among architects, designers, and craftsmen who need authentic metal finishes without the limitations of traditional metalwork. Because it’s applied like a coating rather than fabricated and installed like sheet metal, VeroMetal works on surfaces and shapes that would be impractical or impossible with conventional metal.

How VeroMetal Application Works

Surface Preparation: VeroMetal adheres to wood, MDF, drywall, plaster, concrete, or existing paint when properly prepared. We assess each surface and apply appropriate primers—sealing primers for porous surfaces, light sanding for smooth surfaces to create mechanical adhesion.

Base Coat Application: We apply VeroMetal using specialized trowels to create desired texture – smooth for polished metal, textured for hammered appearance, or worked for specific patterns. Multiple thin layers build to 300-500 microns, the thickness crucial for how metal particles interact with patina solutions and how authentic the result appears.

Oxidation and Patina Development: After curing, we apply patina solutions that chemically react with real metal particles. Copper oxidizes to green verdigris, iron develops rust, bronze ages to brown patina. This is an authentic chemical reaction – the metal responds exactly like solid metal would. We control the process from subtle aging to dramatic oxidation.

Sealing: Once desired patina is achieved, we seal with protective coatings appropriate to the application. Sealing locks in patina, prevents further oxidation if desired, and protects from moisture and wear while adjusting final sheen from matte to high gloss.

Where VeroMetal Application Excels

Architectural Features

Columns, corbels, ceiling details, and wall panels gain authentic metal character without structural concerns. A VeroMetal copper ceiling weighs pounds instead of hundreds of pounds, eliminating the need for reinforced framing while delivering the same visual impact.

Kitchen and Bath Elements

Backsplashes, range hoods, vanity fronts, and accent walls benefit from metal’s sophisticated appearance with better practicality than solid metal. VeroMetal withstands moisture and cleaning while maintaining its appearance.

Furniture and Cabinetry

Cabinet doors, drawer fronts, table tops, and furniture pieces transformed with VeroMetal become statement pieces. The finish works particularly well when integrating metal accents with wood or painted elements.

Commercial Installations

Restaurant interiors, retail displays, office features, and hospitality spaces use VeroMetal for metal aesthetics with design flexibility. The material can cover large surfaces or complex shapes that would be cost-prohibitive in solid metal.

Exterior Applications

Entry doors, address numbers, mailboxes, planters, and architectural trim benefit from authentic metal that patinas naturally. Unlike painted metal effects, VeroMetal continues aging and developing character over time.

Restoration Projects

Historic buildings often featured metal elements now damaged or missing. VeroMetal allows faithful reproduction of original metal finishes without the cost and complexity of traditional metalworking.

Why Choose House Hues for VeroMetal Installation

VeroMetal application requires specialized training most painters haven’t received. The material behaves differently than paint, application techniques are specific, and patina development requires understanding metal oxidation chemistry.

David Lee learned VeroMetal application through certified training, not trial and error on client projects. We understand how substrate preparation affects adhesion, how application technique impacts texture, how patina solutions react with each metal type, and how environmental factors influence the process.

This expertise matters because VeroMetal mistakes are expensive to correct. The material cost is significant, and improper application requires stripping and starting over. Getting it right the first time requires proper training and experience.

We pair VeroMetal expertise with our broader finishing knowledge. Many projects benefit from combining VeroMetal accents with Fine Paints of Europe high gloss elements or lime wash backgrounds. Understanding how specialty finishes complement each other allows us to design comprehensive solutions.

Maintenance and Longevity

Sealed VeroMetal requires minimal maintenance. Regular cleaning with appropriate products maintains appearance. The sealed surface resists moisture, won’t corrode beyond the controlled patina, and maintains its character for decades.

If you prefer a living patina that continues developing, we can seal with breathable finishes that allow ongoing oxidation. This approach works well for exterior applications or interior features where evolving character is desired.

Damage to VeroMetal can often be repaired by reapplying material to affected areas, re-developing patina to match, and resealing. Unlike solid metal that requires replacement of entire sections, VeroMetal allows targeted repairs.

Owner of House Hues

A residential painting studio built on craft, not shortcuts

Meet The Founder
Behind House HUES

I started House Hues in 2019 with a clear intention: to approach painting differently. Too often, residential painting is treated as a race; rushed schedules, cut corners, and little respect for the homes people live in. That has never been how I work.

My background is in restoration work, where details aren’t optional and shortcuts don’t survive. Working on older homes teaches you quickly that quality can’t be faked. Finishes must be matched thoughtfully, materials must be chosen correctly, and preparation determines whether the work lasts years or decades. That foundation shaped how I approach every project today.

At House Hues, we specialize in interior and cabinet painting for residential homes throughout the Pittsburgh region. Whether it’s a high-gloss finish, a VeroMetal application, or a straightforward interior repaint, the goal is always the same: apply the right process, the right materials, and the right level of care. As if it were my own home.

The business has grown through word of mouth and repeat clients, not volume or shortcuts. I’m not interested in being the largest painting company in Pittsburgh. I’m focused on doing work I’m proud of.
